Once Upon a Time… The Thumb Ruled
Do you
think that the body will suffer if such a thing really happened? You are absolutely
right!
The pinky
& pointer were starving to death. The hand found it increasingly difficult
to function. The body got imbalanced & tilted. But thumb had great
influence and directed everyone to sacrifice & do their best in such times
of great crisis and save the only body they all had. He announced subsidies for
pinky, gave special protection to pointer. He even ordered the left hand to
allow its thumb to grow equal to its own size so as to get perfect (im)balance
for both the hands. He imported someone else’s normal hands to feed the body
till things get back to normal. Legs protested but they were
arrested!
This
intelligent thumb is like us the Humans in the scheme of Planet Earth. This
intelligent thumb is our Economy in the scheme of our Society & Ecology.
In good old
days, the thumb was small part of the body and had certain role & purpose.
It got whatever & as much as it needed…nothing more, nothing less. It had
its separate unique identity but was still an integral part of One body. But
when it became too intelligent.......
In last
hundred years, we humans have changed everything for worse. Corona is just one
trigger, may be little more serious. As Economy attempted to overtake Ecology
& Society, we messed up and still continue with the same old failed models
with a hope that things will get back to the new normal (with normal inside!).
As human
population multiplied, everything that enabled it grew manifold like
urbanisation, industries, financial markets, etc. Obviously it helped GDP and
it became the single most important metric to measure growth & progress of countries
and of some business tycoons & politicians. The masters of the cave (as
Plato said) have only widened inequality gap and rendered most people landless,
who once owned & managed their small little farms & livestock in a
remote little village (Atmanirbhar).
The quality
of soil has deteriorated for ever, with little nutrient in the earth. The
forests and entire eco-systems supporting it have vanished. There is hardly any
area which is not mined. We have extracted most of the mineral resources of
millions of years to boost numbers of the century.
The quality
of water has deteriorated, with not much left within or under the soil. The
rivers & oceans are filled with our garbage more than fishes. The glaciers
are vanishing. We have sucked all the energy of the plant kingdom.
The quality
of air is poisoned, with alarming pollution levels everywhere. We have lost
more than 50% biodiversity in the last 50 years and that reflects our
animalistic behaviour.
All
parameters that reflect short term good of humans have shown fantastic growth
(like thumb did), but at cost of long term health & well-being of the whole
body and especially of those who can’t express… like other species, poor
migrants, etc. This is despite the fact that (written) purpose of most organisations
is to save the planet and work on SDGs!
Till we don’t elevate
the Brain & the Heart and put thumb back to its rightful (limited) position,
we will not be able to solve the biggest problems of the world. This needs
drastic change and even scrapping of current ways of thinking & doing where
money is the core. It seems corona virus
is an attempt of the SUPREME to clean Nature’s Balance Sheet. It is a message
from the Universe to abandon the current models that most of us are trapped
into and adopt a new approach that gives Ecology & Human nature its due
space, not just in word but also in action and spirit. Either we do it by choice
or it will be forced upon us. No one can stop God. He was, He is and He will
always be the Ultimate.
